Multiple Sclerosis, known as MS, is a chronic condition which affects the brain and spinal cord. The condition occurs when the immune system starts to attack the myelin that coats and protects your nerve fibres.
Symptoms of MS differ from patient to patient, depending on the area and extent of the nerve damage. The symptoms can include numbness, tingling, muscle spasms and spasticity, pain and fatigue. For some patients, symptoms deteriorate over time, whereas for others, they come and go in periods of relapse and remission.
In November 2019, Sativex, a cannabis-based medicine was approved for prescription on the NHS in England for treating spasticity in MS patients. Prior to that, Welsh patients could access the drug since 2014, however it is not yet available in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
This medicine can only be prescribed by a specialist doctor and it contains equal measures of both CBD and THC.
There has been no official research on the effects of just CBD with MS. But together, at the right ratio, CBD with THC have been shown to reduce muscle spasms and pain in patients with MS.
Research on CBD and its effects suggest that it could be beneficial. The evidence from previous research makes CBD known for being an anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and neuroprotective. Research has also shown how safe CBD is with no known adverse reactions in patient trials to date.
