While it may not get you high like THC, CBD is psychoactive.
Before you all panic, let me explain what a psychoactive means because the word has a bad rep.
Many popular supplements and common consumables are in fact psychoactive and, like CBD, do not get you ‘high’.
The medical definition of psychoactive is:
“A psychoactive means it acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in changes in mood, consciousness and behaviour.”
CBD is psychoactive because it interacts with the central nervous system and has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and even psychotic symptoms in people with schizophrenia.
It does not however give you the sensory and psychological effects of THC.
So how do we describe CBD? Non-intoxicating!
An intoxicating substance is a chemical substance that impairs judgement, excites and stimulates.
THC is an intoxicating cannabinoid that gives you a buzz and gets you stoned. CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that does not cause any of those sensory and psychological effects. But CBD does have effects on the body and brain.
If fact, CBD buffers the intoxicating effect of THC.
I get that the word psychoactive can still sound a little scary. To reassure you that something being psychoactive doesn’t mean it’s bad, tea, coffee and even cocoa (aka chocolate) are all psychoactive.
Another incredible psychoactive is ashwagandha which is one of the most popular herbs used to relieve stress and anxiety, just like CBD!
To summarise, CBD is a psychoactive but non-intoxicating. Case closed.
