Thanks to the rise of CBD and laws being passed to support the legal use of cannabis for medical reasons, an entire new sector has grown within the medical field – cannabis nursing.
A nursing workforce knowledgeable of CBD is needed now more than ever, with more and more people embracing CBD and medical cannabis legalisation being rolled out every year. Cannabis nurses need to support this demand, advise patients and become experts in the different uses, applications and health benefits.
The American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) was founded in 2006 when Ed Glick saw the need for cannabis nursing ahead of the cannabinoid boom. He involved nurse and friend Mary Lynne Mathre and acted with a sense of urgency.
“If we don’t do it, someone else will”
The non-profit was formally organised in 2010 as an American Nurses Association outreach campaign was developed.
“Nurses and other health care providers need information about medical cannabis” ACNA mission statement.
According to the ACNA, any licensed or registered nurse can become a cannabis nurse.
The organisation has created two courses to fully educate nurses on the modern medicine being legalised in an increasing number of states.
Cannabis clinics are quite the norm in the US and we are beginning to see them crop up in the UK, too.
While UK doctors are years behind their US counterparts in understanding medical cannabis, progress in this area will inevitably create nursing jobs that require specialist knowledge of CBD and other cannabinoids. It is surely only a matter of time before cannabis and CBD become part of the nurse’s toolkit.
