The Facts – CBD is an Anti-Inflammatory

CBD & inflammation

Inflammation is key to our immune system, protecting the body and inducing the natural healing process.

One of the main benefits of CBD to the human body is its anti-inflammatory powers, which have been identified in several studies to aid in fighting chronic disease.

Types of inflammation

There are two types of inflammation: acute and chronic.

Acute inflammation is good because of its rapid onset and short duration. It acts as part of the body’s natural healing process when sudden damage occurs, like a fracture or a sprain.

When something like this occurs, usually by accident, the immune system mobilises protective cells to the damaged area, bruising occurs, and the inflammation eventually subsides with time.

Chronic inflammation is where CBD has been shown to perform.

Pathogens, bacterial and viral infections and auto-immune concerns are all root causes of chronic inflammation.

There is increasing evidence from global researchers all spreading the same message: chronic inflammation can cause chronic diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

One animal study from the European Journal of Pain showed CBD applied to a localised area of the skin could help reduce pain and inflammation caused by arthritis.

Studies also show a link between chronic inflammation and cancer. According to a 2002 review published in the journal Oncology, chronic inflammation predisposes to the development of various forms of cancer, with researchers estimating that approximately 15-20% of all cancers stem from internal inflammation.

How does CBD work against chronic inflammation?

CBD can interact with a wide variety of a molecular targets in our body via the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). Its anti-inflammatory powers and how they are actioned depend on the different receptors the cannabinoid meets within this system.

CBD interacts directly with specific immune cells, which in turn counter the production of pro-inflammation compounds. This reflects the role of the ECS as a regulatory tool within the body, as this interaction promotes the creation of anti-inflammatory compounds.

This counter production of pro-inflammation compounds balanced with the creation of anti-inflammatory compounds, coupled with the additional therapeutic effects of this phytocannabinoid make CBD a very effective plant-based anti-inflammatory.
