2020 brought with it a whole host of changes, phrases and new routines (which we all deemed the ‘new normal’, even 6 months along).
It’s been almost a year since the first lockdown began, and 7 months since mask became a legal requirement. Since we started donning the face coverings in order to protect ourselves and those around us, we discovered a new pandemic that previously only healthcare works suffered with – maskne.
Maskne is shorthand for ‘mask acne’. It’s exactly what it says, acne caused by wearing a face mask. This type of acne is called ‘acne mechanica’ and is most common for those working within healthcare.
This acne is caused by skin friction, heat, pressure on the skin or lack of air exposure. A breakout of this type of acne can occur as the skin is rubbed, squeezed or stretched.
Acne mechanica can occur anywhere in the body. Skin that is sweaty and constantly rubbed, such as our faces under our masks, can quickly break out into an annoying rash.
Research suggests that CBD skincare products, such as topicals, have anti-inflammatory properties which can be beneficial in treating skin issues like acne. The research has shown that CBD has anti-inflammatory effects on the skin’s oil-producing glands.
It’s so important to keep your reusable masks clean. Over time, there is a build-up of dirt and bacteria on the mask. When you want to avoid irritating your skin, the last thing you want to so it wear a dirty mask. Wash your mask daily, on a high heat, with fragrance-free laundry detergent. (Side note- be sure to also regularly wash your pillowcases. They see the hidden bacterial that might be left behind after cleansing your face. Keep these clean in your fight against maskne)
Make sure to cleanse your face, twice a day. Before donning your new mask of the day, make sure you have wiped away any dirt, oil, sweat and bacteria lingering on your face. This should also be done at the end of the day after wearing the same mask for upward of 8 hours.
It is so important to keep your skin as hydrated as possible. This helps to improve your skin’s barrier function. Invest in a good quality moisturiser to keep your skin in top condition. We recommend our Re:fresh Face Cream.
With all the bacteria and sweat under your mask, your pores have enough to deal with. Try not to wear any makeup if possible.
